Knowing God

Romans 11:33 Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!

If you haven’t already noticed, it has been a few weeks since my last blog post. Previous to this point, I had been searching scripture, seeking God, and prayerfully writing about His attributes. It had been an exhilarating time with an abundance of information to sift through and glorious devotions that followed. But as I reached the culmination of my writings, I strongly desired to sum up the devotions into a single essay about who God is as my triumphant finale. But, night after night I would lose track of time while reading intensely. Stumbling over words, I tried to wrap up the multi-facets of His glorious character into a culminating thought, only to end the long night with a blank page staring back at me. Not one word written after hours, days and weeks of contemplation. Every morning I’d wake completely frustrated, unable to articulate any of what I had learned.

“Is all this just for me, Lord? Have I sought you out in the night hours, wrestling with intangible thoughts, greeting the dawn with your magnificence still breaking through my every concentration; only to have it bound up in my stupefied heart and mind?”

At first, I thought I had hit another wall. So I poured through more and more references, translations and commentaries. Still, I found writing what I had learned impossible. Every start ended with a pile of empty, meaningless words without profound revelation. Finally, I gave up trying. Alone in my dimly lit girl-room, I prayed:

“God, if this is from You – please write this for me. I am at the end of my abilities and have fallen short of declaring all You have been, all You are today, and all You are for eternity. Please help me.”

The next morning as I left the house for work, I past my girl-room and thought: tonight is the night. If God intends for me to continue on, He will give me all I need to write. As the day labored on, a calm determination overtook me. Unlike the days of frustration before, I felt unshakeable peace. It continued to grow deep inside me, strengthening my spirit, giving me clarity and a sudden understanding of the battle I had unwittingly (and quite poorly) been fighting.

The enemy had me wrapped up in my own thoughts and abilities, tempting my sense of pride with ideas of grandeur. Having started out with the intention of glorifying God in my writing, I slipped easily into glorifying self. God would not have His character tainted by any work of my flesh to be used in the hands of His enemy. So, night after night my works were confounded. No longer did His word bring new revelation. With every effort of my own flesh, with every attempt of my selfish pride, I was thwarted by my merciful, Heavenly Father. Patiently He waited for me to see my sin, confess it before Him, surrender my will and fall into His arms with complete abandon. Like a beacon from a distant lighthouse, He led me back to the safety of His shores and revealed the fog of self-righteousness the enemy had me wandering in. Not anymore!

Satan would have us believe our God is unreachable, un-relatable, and aloof. He would have us believe each characteristic of God makes him more abstract and given to multiple interpretations. He wants us to believe God does not hear, or see, or care about us. He is selfish, hurtful, and harsh. The last thing Satan wants you and me to believe is who God really is.

God is wise, unchanging, sovereign, holy, righteous, faithful, light, good, merciful, gracious and above all: LOVE. He is the perfect illustration of each and every word expressed. In wisdom, He surpasses all we can know or comprehend. In sovereignty, His rule reaches past time, space, earth and heaven. In holiness, His perfection exemplifies spotless perfection with searing purity. In righteousness, He is absolute truth and justice without preference or prejudice. In faithfulness, He is resolute, consistent and unwavering. In light, He illuminates the expanse of the universe and in it nothing is hidden from Him. In goodness, He is compassionate and caring always for our betterment. In mercy, He is complete forgiveness with everlasting peace. In graciousness He shows unmerited favor, choosing to place His affections upon the ingrate and derelict. In love, He is lavish, limitless, and everlasting. He is omnipresent – always present, everywhere, continuously and simultaneously. He is omnipotent – unlimited and all powerful. His omniscient –  all knowing, seeing and perceiving. He is self-existent – He needs nothing or no one to be; He simply IS. He is self-sufficient – He needs nothing to perpetuate Himself or His works. He is God Almighty! Ruler of Heaven and earth!

Although He is past our perfect comprehension, He will not have our finite capacities keep us from knowing Him personally. He would also not have us to know Him simply by statistics or by philosophical acquaintance. No, He would have us to know Him intimately and tangibly, inspiring us to complete obedience. God has made himself known to all mankind through His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. In Him, by Him and through Him, He made known His love for humanity, His unmerited grace & mercy, His complete forgiveness and His power over sin and death. Once we have surrendered our lives to Him, accepting His Son as our Lord and Savior, we are forever His and He is forever ours. God reveals himself to us, day by day, by the power of His Holy Spirit, through the revelation of scripture, His holy word, the Bible.

As we consider who God is, seek to know Him through His word, and deepen our relationship with Him, we cannot help but obey Him, serve Him, love Him and love others. Our lives are supernaturally changed by our GOD, the GREAT I AM. Do not let the enemy deceive you or convince you into believing otherwise. As long as you hold firmly to whom He is according to His word, no lie of the enemy can stand!

Praise and glory be to God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.

1 John 5:20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.

About athenammorris

Wife, mother, step-mother, and grandmother. I first came to the Lord in 1986. However, I backslid for a few years and rededicated my life to the Lord in 1990. Since then, my road through sanctification has been long and hard; mostly the result of my own rebellion. However in 2011, I finally I completely surrendered to His will and not my own and began to experience spiritual growth. My hope for this blog; people will be encouraged in their daily walk with the Lord. I'm a normal-joe-Christian just like every other Christian; struggling with the flesh, enduring trials, living life all with the intent of glorify and pleasing God. View all posts by athenammorris
