Ephesians 5:18-19 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ…
Paul encourages believers to address or “speak” to one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs. Does that mean we walk up to one another and burst into songs of praise, while plucking an instrument in perfect melody? Wouldn’t that be an awkward scene? Especially for those of us who are musically challenged! It really means we are to be inspired by the Spirit to share songs of thanksgiving and praise. This is no ordinary song developed by a talented writer or musician. It is more than just an expression of how we feel. It is a divinely inspired song from Heaven. It cannot be sung while filled with worldly influences or engaged in sinful behaviors. This is HIS song – a new song inspired by Heaven itself. To sing this song, we must first be filled with the Spirit and ready to receive divine revelations from Heaven and declarations of salvation through Christ Jesus. The interaction with our brothers and sisters that follows is infused with joy and thanksgiving as we speak together in harmonic melody. To the outside world, it looks and sounds like common, pleasant conversation. But to the Lord, it is a beautiful choral accompanied by a grand symphony as His children’s voices are lifted high in worship and praise!
Today, before you set out to interact with your brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus, seek to be filled with His Holy Spirit first. As you engage in conversation, keep your heart attentive to the Spirit as He inspires your conversation, or “song,” with the glorious language from Heaven.
Ephesians 6:23–24 Peace be to the brothers, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Grace be with all who love our Lord Jesus Christ with love incorruptible.
