Since subscribing to unlimited long distance call minutes, my husband has been spending more time on the telephone talking to his family back in Maine. Since then, his accent has become more pronounced. “Honey, Pauk the cauh in my spaut.” Translated: “Honey, park the car in my spot.” At first just a few words here and there were a little different, but over the course of several months his speech has become completely saturated with eastern brogue. Even family and friends have noticed the distinct difference. The sweet time of precious conversation with his family has had a remarkable effect on him in all the best ways.
1 Corinthians 15:33 Do not be deceived: “Evil company corrupts good habits.”
Whether we wish to admit it or not, we are sponges. We absorb and internalize whatever we choose to expose ourselves to; people, television, radio, movies, books, internet, etc. They are all external influences with a direct effect on our internal being. The more we expose ourselves, the more saturated we become. We might not notice it at first, but just give us a little “squeeze” and what comes pouring out is the evidence of what we’ve been pouring in. If under the pressures of life we find ourselves reacting poorly, reaching for ungodly solutions, or practicing sin, then it is time to repent, be cleansed and be filled with His righteousness. It is time to devote ourselves to studying His word. It is time to consider the company we keep. It is time to choose wisely what we expose our senses to. The evidence of which will be manifested in our thoughts, our words, our actions and our “good habits.” Most of all, the remarkable difference in our lives will bring God glory!
Psalm 1:1–2 Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.
