1 John 4:18–19 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. We love because he first loved us.
My shallow, stony heart cannot bear to love the way He loves. It protects itself. It has boundaries and limitations both self imposed and fear imposed. It uses eyes that see through human experience and guards itself against vulnerability. As much as I try to love others the way Christ loves others, I fall so short. The “perfect love” of God must manifest itself in my heart. I must surrender and allow the gentle plow of the Holy Spirit to root out the boulders within the dark sinful soil of my heart. I need only to allow Him to move in me, trust Him and walk in boldness. What is there to fear? He is with me! I will love – not in my own strength or ability – but in His Spirit because He loved me and gave His son to die for my sins that I might live and live boldly for Him.
